A Study of Respirable Silica in Underground Coal Mines: Particle Characteristics

چکیده
Respirable crystalline silica is now considered to be a major culprit of resurgent lung disease among US coal miners—especially in central Appalachia—though questions remain regarding the specific circumstances around exposure it. As part larger investigation dust 15 mines, recent study examined content both respirable mine samples and generated laboratory from primary source materials (i.e., rock strata dusting products). It concluded that being drilled for roof bolting or cut along with most significant many which consistent expectations based on other scattered datasets. However, little information available characteristics particles might important understanding risks better. In current study, represents another aforementioned scanning electron microcopy energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) were used analyze size surface condition degree surface-associated clay) 1685 identified 58 samples. The results indicated typically finer locations nearby drilling cutting activities than it within mine, but Central Appalachian mines not necessarily regions. An analysis particle surfaces revealed often does occur as “free”, high-purity particles. Rather, there can range occurrences including having thin “occlusion” layer clay, agglomerates also contain types clays, even ingrained such coal.

Study to Assess Respirable Dust Exposures in Underground U.S. Coal Mines
In 1991 the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a special program to assess occupational exposures to respirable coal mine dust in underground coal mines. Priority was given to longwall mining operations, mines with a history ofhaving a problem controlling dust to the applicable standard, and a representative number of all other mines. Measurements were obtained on approximately 720...
متن کاملEvaluation of occupational exposures to respirable dust in underground coal mines.
Dust can be produced by almost all mining operations in underground coal mines and seen all around the mine. Different occupational groups get exposed to different dust levels and in order to minimize the probability of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), it is necessary to investigate the workers exposed to dust. This study aimed to evaluate the dust concentration conditions in unde...
متن کاملControlling respirable dust in underground coal mines in the United States
As mining operations in the United States (US) have become more productive, con trolling the dust exposure of mine workers has become more challenging. In response, US mining operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and are looking to emerging control tech nologies in an effort to better control airborne respirable dust levels. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the ...
متن کاملGas Drainage Improvement in Underground Coal Mines
Effective gas management is vital to the success of the longwall mining in the Bulli seam, in the Southern Coalfield, Sydney Basin, NSW, Australia. The evolution of gas drainage methods and practices are discussed with respect to gas type, gas drainage lead time and prevailing geological conditions. Both underground to inseam drilling and surface to inseam drilling techniques are described at b...
متن کاملRock dusting considerations in underground coal mines
Rock dusting to prevent coal dust explosions has been in widespread use in U.S. underground coal mines since the early 1900s. Underground coal mining technology has changed significantly over this same time period, becoming highly mechanized and produces finer coal dust particles which are more explosive. Despite the advances in mining technology, mine-wide dust sampling practices have remained...
